Liar! Liar! Pants on Fire!

Updated: Mar 25, 2019

Why do people lie ? This is an interesting – if frustrating question.

There are several reasons why this this happens.

The white Lie

I guess we all tell these at some point or another. You don’t want to meet that friend, so you tell them you already have plans, have a headache or some other fake illness

The People -Pleaser

The want to be liked and fear that if they agree to do something someone has asked they won’t be liked any more. Then they find they cant do that thing they promised, so they have to make excuses in an attempt to still be liked.

Over confident

This person is really quite insecure, so they make up stories to make themselves look better than they are, which they often really believe themselves. Such as they are the best at what they do.

To get out of trouble

They have done something wrong, so they lie to try to cover up. Sometimes blaming others, because they fear the repercussions on them. But with each lie they find themselves telling another to cover up for the last one.

Denial

When you don’t want to admit there maybe a real health problem which you don’t want to face, and won’t seek medical advice , because ‘what if there is something really wrong?’

By lying to yourself or others it creates lack of trust, and by doing that you find that it has the opposite effect of the one want. Friends start doubting you and relationships start to crumble as your partner feels betrayed.

It’s also made worse by the fact that it becomes a habit you find difficult to break. So its so much better to be honest, be yourself and if you have done something wrong, own up to it and take responsibility. You will be much more respected by others - and yourself.
